Dr. Verne Ross
My name is Dr. Verne Ross, and I am from Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan. I first joined the Transitional Year Programme in 2002 and completed it in 2004. Having been out of school for many years and not having completed high school, discovering TYP was truly life-changing. Applying meant leaving my full-time position at Anishnawbe Health Toronto — a difficult decision and a real leap of faith. But from the moment I walked through those doors and met the other students and faculty, I knew I had made the right choice. The excitement, the support, and the sense of belonging I felt from day one made all the difference.
Chi-Meegwetch — thank you — to the incredible faculty and staff who guided and supported me throughout that journey. I could not have achieved what I have without your encouragement. My message to all of you students is this: believe in yourselves and support one another. TYP will challenge you, but every bit of effort will be worth it. When you find yourself doubting your abilities or wanting to give up, reach out — speak to someone right away. Never lose hope or give up on your education, your dreams, or your goals. Share your story and your voice — people will listen.
